LGBTQ Rights

Even though much progress has been made recently for the LGBTQ community, discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is still legal in many states. We must update our federal non-discrimination laws to include the LGBTQ community.

John supports H.R. 2282, The Equality Act, which would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other key federal non-discrimination laws to provide clear, explicit protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, credit, federally funded programs, education, and federal jury service.

In early 2017, the Trump Administration reversed Obama era federal protections that allowed transgender students to use bathrooms coinciding with the gender with which they identify. John would support a federal bill that amends Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 to include such protections in schools that receive federal funding.

The recent refusal of the U.S. Supreme Court to hear a case on same-sex spousal benefits for municipal employees in Houston opens the door to the unequal treatment of legally married couples based on sexual orientation. John would support a federal bill that guarantees spousal benefits to all couples, regardless of their sexual orientation.
